The Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (KLSCCCI) donated two units of Centralized Monitoring System (CMS) and five intensive care unit beds with a total worth of RM 502,000 to Sungai Buloh Hospital today for treatment of COVID-19 patients, in response to the surge in COVID-19 cases and overstretched health system.

Tan Sri Ter Leong Yap, the President of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) said that the rising death toll and overwhelmed healthcare system is of great concern to all of us.

As part of the Chambers’ ongoing efforts to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, the ACCCIM and its Constituent Members across the country are stepping forward to offer assistance in different ways.

Last month, the ACCCIM has donated 20 units of High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) and 3 ventilators worth RM 626,000 to Sungai Buloh Hospital and the Health Department of Penang, respectively. This figure was jointly contributed by ACCCIM and few ACCCIM leaders, namely Tan Sri Ter Leong Yap, Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian, Tan Sri Lim Kuang Sia and Dr. Chia Song Kun.

In addition to the aid provided by ACCCIM, the ACCCIM donation to The Edge COVID-19 Fund was also used to purchase 33 ventilators for the Sungai Buloh Hospital in mid-May.

Given the urgency of increasing vaccination coverage, the Terengganu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry worked closely with Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UNISZA) in mobilising resources for setting up on-campus vaccination site, expecting to administer 1, 000 vaccine shots daily. Meanwhile, the Kelantan Chinese Chamber of Commerce plans to bring into action by offering its hall space to be used as vaccination center.

ACCCIM has actively contributed to help ramping up health care capacity in the country since the outbreak in March last year. Besides the RM 2.0 million donation to The Edge COVID-19 Equipment Fund and COVID-19 Health Care Workers Support Fund, ACCCIM together with the Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce has made a donation of RM 500,000 to the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Sabah branch last October for medical supplies to aid its battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

While being part of the collective effort in fighting COVID-19, we strongly urges the Government to expedite the National COVID-19 Immunization Program (NIP) in anticipation of a large delivery of vaccines supply starting this month onwards.

The first and second phases of lockdown are critical for the Government and a whole society approach working together to keep the prevalence of infections at low and manageable levels, as well as to speed up vaccination. This is in addition to conducting population-wide testing, trace contacts and isolate, implement and enforce SOP and strong social-distancing measures.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance for Government to mobilise and coordinate with businesses, industries as well as private healthcare sector (hospitals and clinics, medical health liners) to source more vaccines and embark on a fast-track nationwide vaccination program toward achieving this life-saving objective.
